Get involved Fundraise for us Keeping your fundraising safe and legal Insurance It’s a good idea to consider whether you need insurance when planning your event. If your event is a one-off then single event cover is very reasonably priced. There are many insurance providers online and often the best way to compare them is use comparison websites and/or compare their ratings through trusted platforms such as Which? or TrustPilot. The main type of insurance is Public Liability Insurance (PLI) and insures against claims made by guests/participants/members of the public regarding injury, illness or property damage due to an activity you have organised. Do I need insurance if my event is in my home or garden? If you are inviting guests/members of the public to your event, you will still need to take out PLI, even if your event is happening on private property. What if I’m planning to serve food or drink? If you’re planning on serving food or drink at your event you will need to ensure you have the appropriate level of PLI cover. All food provided should be labelled clearly with ingredients and allergens, e.g. contains milk or gluten. Providing shop bought cakes or working with a caterer will make this easier. If you are serving alcohol you will also need to ensure this is covered by your PLI, and if you are on an unlicensed premises, you will need to secure an alcohol licence to both sell and/or provide alcohol at your event. The easiest option to request the venue to manage this for you. Organising a raffle If you hold a small raffle at your event, you will not need a licence. You’ll need to make sure you sell the tickets and draw the raffle during the main event, even if your event runs for a few days. If you’re organising a raffle online, using a platform like JustGiving, don’t forget to tick the box when asked if you’re organising a raffle. This is so they know not to claim the Gift Aid on your ticket sales as money raised from raffles is not eligible for Gift Aid.
