The trolley, stocked with complimentary snacks, fruit, hot drinks, and toiletries, will be managed by the Charity and run by dedicated volunteers. Your team simply provides a main contact, storage, and ongoing collaboration.

Our Trolley Volunteers brightening hospital stays

Lidia Lunga is one of the trolley volunteers, she wanted to give something back after her son received specialist care at Leeds Children’s Hospital.

As a single mum, caring for a son with complex medical needs, Lidia found it difficult to find a full-time job, so this voluntary role opened up an opportunity that works around her family commitments.

We spoke to Lidia about why she loves being a Trolley Volunteer, she told us:

“As someone who has been on the other side in hospital with my poorly son, I know exactly how these parents are feeling. When you’re by your child’s side worrying about them, you’re putting them first and can forget to take care of yourself and feel guilty about leaving their bedside to just grab a snack or a drink.

It’s lovely to see how parents react when we offer them a drink, snack or even a listening ear, they are so grateful and appreciative and you can see that it just makes their day! The parents are so tired and having someone recognise them and their wellbeing is equally as important.”

Research: Improving outcomes in Mental Health for Children & Young People

Leeds Hospitals Charity is offering a new funding opportunity to support research focused on the mental health of children and young people treated within Leeds Teaching Hospitals. This funding, made possible by a generous legacy donation, aims to support innovative research projects with a direct impact on patient care over the next five years.

With rising national concerns around poor mental health in young people and increasing admissions to acute medical wards for mental health conditions, we will look to support studies that explore and improve care for children presenting at A&E, admitted to inpatient wards with mental health concerns, or experiencing medically unexplained symptoms. Projects might investigate new therapeutic approaches, test health technologies, or inform policy and practice improvements within hospital settings.

Our Q1 Funding:

Since the start of the financial year, we have launched our Patient Experience funding opportunity and following a review of initial expressions of interest we have invited selected applicants to make a full application. We’re looking forward to reviewing these in due course. In addition to the open funding opportunities, we support projects through other means like specific donations, strategic funding and via our Linked Charities.

We have committed to supporting the second year of 7 Days of Play at Leeds Children’s Hospital, ensuring every child and young person has access to the Play Team seven days a week. We are supporting an additional ten staff room refurbishments across the Trust and provided funding to continue to support the Employee Support Fund which offers immediate financial support to staff experiencing financial hardship.

These projects continue to make a difference to patients, their families and staff across Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

Charity Engagement Sessions:

We’re continuing to hold charity engagement sessions across the hospital sites - these are a great chance to chat with you and other staff across the Trust and share details on how we can keep supporting patients, families, and staff across Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

We’ll be at the upcoming LTHT Research and Innovation Conference on 10th July where you’ll find the funding team ready to answer any questions you might have - so please pop by to say hello and find out more about how we can support you.

Are you aware of any upcoming meetings or opportunities that could benefit from our attendance?

We are always on the lookout for the change to engage with staff across the Trust. If you know of any opportunities, please share them with us. Your insights and suggestions are invaluable in helping us stay connected and informed. Let’s work together to ensure we don’t miss out on any chances to grow and support each other.
